Car Fuel Pump : Functions, Signs of Damage & How to Overcome It
The fuel pump or gas pump on a car has a function as a means of pumping fuel from the car's tank to the engine's combustion chamber.
Therefore, the condition of these components must always be maintained so as not to interfere with engine performance. The following will explain the functions and signs of damage to gas stations that you need to watch out for and how to overcome them.
Fuel Pump Function (Gasoline Pump)
As previously explained, the main function of a gas station is to pump fuel from the car's tank to the engine's combustion chamber. However, you need to know that each type of vehicle has a different pump.
For the type of car that uses a carburetor, the gas pump functions to pump fuel from the car's tank to the carburetor. While the type of car that uses an injection engine. The gas pump functions to pump fuel from the car's tank to the car's injector system.
Signs of Damage to the Fuel Pump (gasoline pump)
Here are the signs you need to know when the gas pump has a problem or is damaged.
1. Difficult to start the car engine
When a gas station is damaged or has problems, its performance will be disrupted. Gasoline pumps will not be able to pump fuel properly and cannot prepare fuel according to the needs of the engine's combustion chamber. As a result, the car's fuel line (full line) is empty. This can cause the car engine to be difficult to start.
2. The pace of the car is halting
The next sign of a gas station having a problem, can be indicated by the hiccup of the car when driving. This happens because the gas pump is too dirty, causing a blockage.
3. Check engine lamp is flashing
Signs of damage can then be marked by the appearance of the blinking of the check engine lamp (injection indicator light).
4. The fuel pump fuse is burnt
Clogged fuel pump with dirt can cause damage to the fuel pump fuse. The performance of the fuse will become heavier causing this component to burn.
5. Exhaust smoke emits a pungent odor like the smell of fuel
The appearance of a pungent fuel odor when smoke comes out of the exhaust is a sign that the engine's combustion process is not optimal. This happens due to the gas pump not being able to supply fuel to the engine's combustion chamber to the fullest.
How to Overcome a Broken Gas Station
Here are some ways you can do to deal with a damaged or problematic gas station .
1. Replace the fuel pump fuse
Replace burnt fuel pump fuses with new fuses.
2. Remove the fuel pump relay
Remove the fuel pump relay from its socket to check the resistance of the relay terminals. You can check the resistance at terminal 3 and terminal 5 of the relay. The standard check result must be 10 Ohm or more.
Then double check both terminals and add one power. Add that power to terminals 1 and 2 until the output is less than 1 Ohm.
3. Check the gas station wiring harness
Next you can check the gas station wiring harness whether there is an electric short circuit or not.
4. Checking the gas pump resistance
Next, you can check the gas station resistance section by disconnecting the gas station terminal. Make sure the standard resistance check results on terminals 3 and 4 reach 0.2-0.3 Ohm with a temperature of 20 degrees. If the results are not up to standard, the gas pump motor must be replaced immediately.
Apart from the methods above, you can service your car regularly at the nearest Daihatsu dealer .
